Slippery elm is the common name of the Ulmus fulva tree native to North America, where it has been used medicinally for centuries.
The inner bark of the tree contains mucilage, an easily digestible polysaccharide that is slippery when combined with water. Powdered for use as a supplement, it is a soothing and nutritious food during convalescence.
Slippery Elm Benefits
Sensitive and irritated mucous membranes of the throat, stomach, intestines and urinary tract are protected and soothed by the mucilaginous properties of slippery elm. For heartburn it provides a barrier to acid reflux damage, as well as an anti-inflammatory effect in the stomach and intestines.
Constipation, diarrhoea and flatulence are eased through its lubricating, emollient and laxative effects. It is safe for children and elderly people, easing digestive discomfort and promoting normal elimination while absorbing toxins from the bowel.
Slippery elm contains high levels of several essential minerals and vitamin E, giving it important antioxidant properties. Externally slippery elm can be applied to the skin as a poultice to draw out harmful toxins.
Slippery Elm Side Effects and Contraindications
Contraindicated for any type of bowel obstruction Slippery elm may slow the absorption of medical drugs or other herbal medicines Safe when only the inner bark is used, however be aware of products substituting outer bark which is unsafe in pregnancy and may cause miscarriage or premature labour.
